If you are a fan of British soaps especially Coronation Street which is the country's oldest soap, you can't mistake Julie Goodyear who plays Bet Lynch, the sassy and brassy barmaid from 1970 to 1995. She is one of the best known celebrity and female actresses in Britain. Of course, she doesn't do Shakespeare like her peers but who cares. The book does detail her upbringing including her parents and her life in Northern England in a hamlet called Heywood, Lancashire, England where she lives with her fourth husband, SCott Brand, not in this book. He's 26 years younger than Julie but she still looks fabulous. This book came after she was awarded the M.B.E. (Member of the Order of the British Empire) which is the first level on the Order followed by Officer, Commander, and Finally Dame. I think the actors and actresses on British soaps deserve the same recognition that their peers who do Shakespeare and plays. Coronation Street is hard work. It's not easy and that's because few like Julie are willing to play the same character for years. THe people who work on Coronation Street are much like a family. As it will celebrate it's 50th or golden anniversary, it will be the first British show to do it. It's stars and the creator, Tony Warren, deserve the same honors as their peers who do theater, film, or other television. Soaps even in Britain get no respect. The one holdup regarding this book is the suggestion that Julie is a lesbian. Since she was involved in an 11 year romance with Scott Brand who is 26 years younger than herself, they married last August in a lavish ceremony and also she had three heterosexual marriages. She might have dabbled in lesbian romances or affairs but she is definitely not one now.
