Purple Irises invites the reader to share a woman's transformation from the normal into the extraordinary merely by embracing her own self-determination to reach beyond the expected existence of widowhood.

As a teen-ager,I had the pleasure of knowing this charming woman as the mother of my friend Roz. At the time I had no idea how much pain, desire and spunk she had hidden in her until I read this most enjoyable book. After reading the story I felt as though I had personally accompanied Dorothy on her magical journey to faraway places and that I had shared with her the wonderful opportunity to meet so many interesting people. When I finished the book, I wanted more....like when you've just finished a marvelous meal but you still want dessert. I won't feel that my meal is complete until I read the sequel(hint, hint!)and can accompany Dorothy on her continuing journey to finding happiness and fullfillment as a beautiful, charming and lovable mature woman.

Mrs. Portnoy is able to transport you to exotic locales through her vivid description, and inspires travel and adventure with her own tales. If this gutsy woman, who freely admits her own fears and apprehensions, can sally forth and conquer so much, you begin to feal that perhaps you can can achieve more also. Just reading her book is so inspiring, I wish I were able to learn the self confidence techniques to achieve just a modecum of what she tackled. I haven't even finished the book yet but have already found such joy and courage expressed in so many passages. Plus, the author creates enough interest in the people in her life that you want to know where they are now and how they have faired. A great book.

This is a wonderful book for women, young and old. The author's experiences are fascinating, her descriptions engrossing, and her style captivating. This is must reading for older women "in transition", and for younger women who someday may "have to cope". Men will also find it a most worthwhile read.
