Taking a very "practical" "how to be a psychotherapist" approach, this overview of the process of counseling provides information that is "fundamental" to counseling, but "not" representative of any one theoretical orientation. Concise, yet thorough--and accessible to novice and seasoned professional alike--it explores counseling basics (e.g., skills, relationship building) as well as specific populations (e.g., groups, clients in crisis, couples and diverse populations). Foundation skills. The initial interview. The early phase. The middle phase. The final phase. The client in crisis. Groups and group therapy. Couple therapy. Dealing with diversity. Care and feeding of therapists. For new and seasoned professionals in counsel and psychotherapy.
This book is an excellent overview of the the various phases of counselling and therapy. The authors bring the theoretical material to life by describing clinical examples. In this manner, learning is enjoyable and happens almost effortlessly. Particularly well written is the material pertaining to the initial part of psychotherapy. Another great aspect of this book is that it is written in a very straightforward manner that is not heavy on jargon. Thus, the book is suitable for multiple populations. Students in psychology will find information that will help them develop their therapeutic style. Practicing psychotherapists will find information to help them refine their approach to clients. People that are not psychotherapists will gain greater understanding of therapeutic interventions and, in turn, be able to make more educated choices for their own psychotherapy. As a psychologist and avid reader, I have read part of or all of many books pertaining to doing psychotherapy. This book stands out as one of the best overviews of the process of psychotherapy. I highly recommend it to all interested readers.
