What's better than ninjas? A Kung Fu Turtlebear.

The comic started out in a once-upon-a-time manner, explaining the devastation of when an evil wizard tried to take over 3 kingdoms, but was defeated only to come back at another time. The only hope of stopping him permanently was the 3 princesses that were saved from each kingdom. They were taken to the neutral territory and raised by the King and Queen there. In present time, several years later, it was briefly explained that the girl's tiara's hold a magical power that combined with the neutral territory's magical stone allows the girls to use their powers. The first paragraph is all the world building that gets explained in the book, and it's a bit lack luster in my opinion. I wish more was said, as I think the magical system that involves Phoenixes, and cupcakes that turn folks into unicorns, would be pretty interesting to learn about. The characters personalities were individual to themselves, but not very unique. I also felt that each story (there's three in this book) didn't give the girls a chance to actually learn the moral they were supposed to and grow as characters, making things feel rushed. The colorful art was cute, and I absolutely adore Turtlebear, but there was nothing spectacular about it. Also, some panels didn't match up as far as their ninja masks, (panel 1; mask, panel 2; no mask, panel 3; mask,) which took me out of the story a bit. Overall, I liked this book, but to me it was not very engaging. I thought the stories were fun, the lessons and morals relayed were good for middle school kids, and even a reminder to us older (than middle school kids) folks, that blood isn't everything, family is what you make it, and it's important to stick by those you care about and those that care about you.
