A fundamental objective of orthodontic therapy is the improvement of facial and dentoalveolar aesthetics. From a social standpoint, facial attractiveness may be determined more from a frontal than from a lateral view. Although a myriad of factors contribute to facial esthetics, symmetry may be the quintessential ingredient. Asymmetry in craniofacial areas can be recognized as differences in the size or relationship of the two sides of the face. This may be the result of discrepancies either in the form of individual bones, or a malpositon of one or more bones in the craniofacial complex.
