A great mystery with memorable characters

I picked this book up and decided to try it. Being an avid myster reader, I am always on the lookout for new authors. Mike Phillips is not new, but a great find to come across. The principal character in this mystery series is Sam Dean. A very likeable character who seems to always be between worlds, never quite at home in either one. The setting for this mystery in NYC is incredible. Sam Dean is a journalist (orignal extraction, Haiti, currently living in England), he is doing a favor for his dying friend, searching for his daughter. But the search for Mary makes many people unhappy. Between trying to track down a woman in New York City, Sam also has many interesting interludes with his sometimes girlfriend from Argentina. This book is very flavorful, set in the immigrant neighborhoods of nyc, the English-speaking Caribs and the Spanish-speaking Caribbens. I truly enjoyed it and now I have to go find all of his other books to read. I definitely recommend this to anyone, fast-paced with good characters. Enjoy!
