After these many years, the 1970 State Championship trophy is rusted, broken, and scarred quite a bit. The trophy itself is not worth all the many sacrifices, time spent, hard work, pain, blood and bruised bodies, but it is a symbol and represents all of the above. But much more - what I think we all got out of that season was learning to never give up. We learned how to encourage one another, which is one of the greatest gifts people can give to each other. We learned that when one teammate gets hurt and suffers, we all do, discovering in our hearts that love runs deeper than race, economics, losses, disappointments, athletic abilities, and much more. That trophy represents all the funny stories, heartaches, victories, and camaraderie we were able to experience together. I realize that experiencing that football season and all that came with it by myself would have been so empty and unfulfilling. But experiencing that season with other people who committed themselves and participated on that team was exceptionally fulfilling and worthwhile.
