Excellent text for comprehensive multicultural philosophy of religion course

I have used this text/anthology for about ten years. Editor Stephen Phillips has a knack for picking original source selections that go right to the heart of the topic, and his commentary is unfailingly incisive, even-handed and intelligent. The text provides an excellent basis for understanding the different concepts of God or "divine reality" and the different concepts of faith, salvation, ethics and the afterlife in different living religions, as well as the arguments for the existence of the divine in different religious traditions. Above all, the text is a useful basis for discussing the issue of whether there is an "essence" of major living religion--i.e., something they have in common that makes them all religions. I recommend this text for anyone who wants to teach a course that goes beyond the usual narrow focus on Western religious traditions.

A refreshingly broad examination of world thought. Phillips does a fine job of tending both to the needs and dispositions of the Western reader without diluting any of the non-Western material. A nice break away from the normally Western-dominated bias found in texbooks of this sort.
