The author, a sometimes writer for Horace Greeley's New York Tribune, describes his efforts to help the Union cause during the Civil War. As the title suggests, there is more Gilmore than Lincoln in the book, but Lincoln frequently appears, and Gilmore's own activities, such as defending the Tribune building during the draft riots or eliciting Jefferson Davis' conditions for peace on Lincoln's behalf, are well and entertainingly told. Gilmore's style is that of today's journalists, easy to read and without wasted words.
