Peanut Soup and Spoonbread

This brought back memories of the late thirties and forties when my family and I were often at the Hotel. One of my most charming memories was tightly holding the hand of "Deacon" Brown, the elegant black gentle-man and assistant headwaiter, as he lead me through the kitchen. There were warm smiles and gentle comments - and a very tall chef lifted me to his shoulder for a better view. For a little girl, it was wonderful to be fussed over by such a delightful old man. The photographs of the staircases my brother and I scampered up and the rooms we explored - just as I remembered. For anyone who remembers that lovely old hotel and knows Roanoke, this a must. The peanut soup and spoon bread recipes are both delicious and a wonderful bit of heritage. This is a a beautifully put together book and very nostalgic.

Great Book

This is such a wonderful book. It was written by a Mr. Donlan Piedmont of Roanoke. It is a must for anybody who loves the Hotel Roanoke. The two landmark dishes gave Mr. Piedmont the title of this book. Both recipes are on page 118 of this book. You should try them sometime. This book tells about all the things that happened in Hotel Roanoke, all the way from when it opened for business in the Heart of Roanoke, VA (December 25th, 1882) to when it closed for renovations November 30th, 1989.Like Donlan Piedmont, the Hotel Roanoke has so much meaning to me and so many friends. I recently had my high school graduation dinner there. My former speech teacher Mary Beth Coffey was married to the front desk manager taught me phone manners with two telephones that were once in guest rooms. My former special ed teacher Ann Stone told me that her kids took their first swimming lessons at the hotel's old pool. [....]
