Throughout her years as schoolmistress, Miss Read has gathered excellent accounts of the rich and varied history of her beloved country village, often through neighborly conversation over the gate. Fairacre has garnered its share of odd incidents, entertaining episodes, and village folklore, from an unusual recipe for weight loss found in an old notebook -- and used with alarming consequences -- to the tragic story of the village ghost. With characteristic grace and vigor, Miss Read retells many treasured stories of Fairacre past and present.
This was my favorite of the Fairacre series although I loved the entire series and couldn't put any of them down once I started.
A very good read.

Miss Read has been a favorite for many years, very comforting reading, love for Fairacre pupils and parents is very evident. To read of the "ole time", and yet not that ole when life was simpler is refreshing. Yvonne
Another great book from Miss Read

It's hard for me to be completely objective about this book since I am a tremendous fan of Miss Read's books and enjoy every "trip" I make to Fair Acre and environs! This one is actually a series of stories concerning disparate characters from the past and present who live in the Fair Acre area. Each is woven beautifully into the narrative with rare skill and charm. You'll meet some memorable people and go from laughter to tears ....
