Peter Dance: "For many years I have accumulated notes in some way or other with molluscs and their shells, intending to use them in articles or books, but most have remained unpublished in any form. Now I have edited some of them, adding occasional dashes of autobiography and some illustrations. The arrangement of the articles is arbitrary and intentionally so. Here and there I have inserted additional items, as page fillers. Each of these is separated from the main article by an alternating shell motif... Where possible I have included the common (or vernacular) names of species mentioned, both common and scientific names being included in the Index, parts of which should not be taken too seriously.... I now send it on its inconsequential way with a light heart, trusting that shell collectors and serious students of mulluscs alike may find something entertaining and possible enlightening in its pages."
