I picked up this book in a used book store, and because I just jumped right into it without looking at the publishing information, I had no idea it was published 13 years ago. Even now, when I found that out, I am amazed, because nothing about this book seemed dated in the least. B.D.Colen takes us on an amazing journey through a typical 24 hour day in the surgery department at a hospital. It is very refreshing to hear everything from his own outsider's perspective - he is able to explain complicated medical procedures in words that would make sense to those without hospital knowledge. One thing that really impressed me was how instead of focusing only on the surgeons, Colen made it known how everyone in that department is important - cleaning staff, nurses, anesthesiology, surgeons: EVERYONE! He did some in depth interviews with doctors and nurses so you could see their background, and all of those were interesting. Also, he talked a lot about anesthesiology and how it works - in laymans terms - and that was great as well. I'm still shocked that it was written 13 years ago, because in the book Colen discussed even more dated operating techniques that have sense been thrown out - I can't even imagine what new and high tech procedures and equipment has been invented in the 13 years since this book was written, and I'm so interested that I'm going to research it and find out.
a marvelous book
