Jacob Andrus draws, dreams, but absolutely doesn't talk about a house not far from where he lives. For most, the house and surrounding area are not even thought of, if possible, it's completely avoided. However, for Jacob and two others, Candace, a far too familiar girl from school, and Gavin, who looks to be the odd man out, a freshman who silently rides Jacob's bus, Shadow House is pulling them in. What at first seems like a complex neighborhood puzzle soon turns into an unexpected journey to an alternate timeline where Jacob and company discover the Shadow was hiding more than a house, but also their true purpose. The three soon realize they must work together to outwit a king who at first seems helpful but may not be what he appears. They must quest for another set of doorknobs to unlock a portal home. Life in the Middle Ages is more complicated than they learned in social studies, but something is very wrong in this England they fall into. If they don't learn to control their new abilities and discover the traitor, or traitors, in their midst, getting home may be the least of their problems. Arrows fly, swords clash, and Jacob is trying to unlock his potential amidst this chaos.
