They are married in a secular ceremony in New York, and again in a Muslim ceremony in Riyadh.Rana believes she can adapt to her new family, their ways and their religion, but when she meets Barkodan, Salim's young half-sister, her certainties begin to fall away. Apart from the possibility of her own secret being revealed, he discovers that Barkodan is being imprisoned in the palace for passionately kissing another teenage girl. The girl's action is seen as perverse and warranting punishment.The matter is driven to a crisis by an incident of which Rana seems to be guilty, bringing her into conflict with the family, the country and possibly Salim himself. She sees no way out.
