What would you do if you had eight arms? Octopuses use theirs for many things. They swim, eat, catch prey, and even taste with them.To escape from predators, they also have many strange and interesting options. To confuse others, they spray ink into the water behind them to cloud the water, change colors, adapt their shape to hide and fit into small places, and even change the texture of their skin!Informative text and incredible full-color photographs bring these many-armed creatures to life as they live day to day.Learn the body parts of an octopus and how each one helps this intriguing animal to survive.
My 4-yo has had us reading this book to him almost daily for the last two weeks. We don't read all the text every time, since it's far beyond him. However, he's extremely familiar with the content and captions at this point. The photographs are extremely clear. The text is informative and direct. The content is age-appropriate for the target audience (the 8+ group). I recommend this book for children who are readers or are willing to be read to. I'm not sure what will happen when we have to return "Octopuses" to the library!
excellent photography and writing

Ron Hirschi's _Octopuses_ is an excellent introductory book on the topic. It would make a good book on the subject for a 9-12 year old. However, because difficult terms (i.e. radula, cirri, chromatophores) are defined in the text, I think that even younger readers won't have much trouble with this book. Advanced science readers will be fascinated with the more in-depth facts and description of the octopus' life cycle and other details. The photography in this book is simply marvelous. No one will complain about these images; they accompany the text appropriately, and the book is worth looking through a second time just to gawk at the photos. The writing is awkward at times, but that can't take much away from this book, when the text content and photography are SO strong. This would be an excellent book for a young octopus lover!ken32
