While most people know that water covers 70% of earth’s surface and that only about 5% of the oceans’ depths have been explored, the illustrations in Oceanic Wilderness offer a dramatic and beautiful slice of the areas that HAVE been explored. Large and beautiful images printed on high quality paper stock give even more weight to Steen’s extraordinary photography. It is enough to identify the sea life portrayed and aspects specific to the species and/or action in the image. As a non-scientist, this works perfectly to educate me without overwhelming me. Because the images are so clear and rare, I imagine scientists would also find the book appealing. Species are identified with common and scientific names, size and location, and the depth where it was filmed, offering a good starting point for one to pursue further inquiries. Highly recommended.
