A verbal virtuoso

Blanchfield is the e.e. cummings of the next half-century. The difference is that he plays with the juxtaposition of jewels of words, the effect being much more sly (but also much less warm, initially) -- than a lower-case letter or missing comma. His work is the antithesis of skilllessness.

ny gentle man

with attractive, off-kilter turnings of phrases, blanchfield weaves a narrative of some cryptic delights and ingenuity (with snatches of tenderness). this collection could be more subtle, but its richness in language begs closer reading.
