He has wandered the West, mining for gold, working at a silver smelter, tracking down wanted men as a bounty hunter, and gambling. He's in San Antonio to play poker and decide whether or not to go home after receiving a letter saying his father is critically ill.

Vyanna has trouble registering at the Menger, where single women are not often welcome. Dominick comes to her aid, posing as her fianc . The two are instantly attracted to one another, and attraction grows into love as Nick helps Vye track down Dr. Devine, who flees from San Antonio rather than share his secrets with Vye. She and Nick follow him to New Orleans, where a fiery family reunion awaits Nick. A fancy soir e, violent encounters, and a yellow fever outbreak add tension, leading to the most painful choice Vye will ever have to make.
