Cultural Awareness requires an emic viewpoint

I think in order to truly grasp all that this book is trying to say one must really be able to step outside and inside their own ethnicity and see the whole picture. I am afraid that there are some that have a hard time with that, which is partly due to the very paradigms of the cultures discussed in the book. This book does an excellent job of making that possible, however, for those who want to learn and grow. White privilege is alive and well, and although some (including one reviewer) may see that as racism, it is fact, not. While it is easy to claim that one has been oppressed ... until the time comes when you are truly the minority, I am not sure you will ever understand what the term "racism" really means. Another great book to read is "The Heart of Whiteness: Confronting Race, Racism, and White Privilege," by Robert Jensen. Hall's book does a great job of helping those in the psychology field obtain the much needed cultural information that is often lacking in this area. The scientific basis he uses to address this is also much needed. Also, I think it is about time that minorities have a chance to have self-esteem and present viewpoints without being told that white oppression and white privilege are not alive and well. I guess it is really easy for those who have the privilege to deny it. As a psychologist, the power of denial comes as no surprise to me, in any color.
