Mr. McIntosh's Family: The Mackintosh Clan and the McIntosh Family in the Jacobite Risings, the settlement of Darien, Georgia, and the struggle for the Colonial American southern frontier
The Mackintosh Battalion formed part of the brigade led by Brigadier William Mackintosh of Borlum in the Jacobite Rising of 1715 in Scotland. The Brigadier also participated in the Rising of 1719. A contingent of Clan Mackintosh led by John Mackintosh Mor left Scotland and settled Darien, Georgia, in 1736. The Scottish Highlanders created a military buffer between the British colony of South Carolina and the Spanish colony of Florida. When war broke out between England and Spain, the colonists engaged in combat culminating in the Battle of Bloody Marsh on St. Simons Island. Back in Scotland, another Jacobite Rising erupted in 1745. The Chief of Clan Mackintosh retained his commission in the British army. His wife became known as 'Colonel Anne' when she raised the clan in support of Bonnie Prince Charlie.
