Maria and the mice lived in the same house. Maria's family lives above ground and Mice's family lives below ground. They are good friends, and it is their secret, but they can't tell anyone. Because if Maria's mom and dad knew there were mice in the house, they would get a cat; and if the mice's mom and dad knew their daughter was friends with humans, they would hide in a hole in the ground all day. One night, when it was time to go to bed, Maria couldn't find her mom, and the little mouse couldn't find her mom either.
