(Percussion). Modern School for Mallet-Keyboard Instruments contains materials for the development of technique, performance skill, reading ability and musicianship on marimba, xylophone, vibraphone, bells, and chimes. Compiled by experienced teachers and performers Jim Sewrey, Ben Hans and Tom Schneller, this book includes scalular materials, technical studies, selected excerpts from standard orchestral repertoire, etudes by the legendary Morris Goldenberg, melodic studies, and solos appropriate for recitals, juries, and auditions at the high school, college, and professional levels. This book addresses musical literacy, musicianship, performance, and technique as applied to two-mallet and four-mallet playing.
This is a nice book if you already has good techniques to play with mallets. It has a lot of lessons about different kind of music. But if you are a novice and does not has notion of techniques then you might get some difficulties reading the lessons. But if you already play, it is a nice book to improve your techniques with a lot of different practices. Enjoy.

This book is great for working towards building mallet excellence. I am a high schooler and have recently discovered this masterpiece and I have done nothing but grow stronger in my mallet technique since the exercises have become regulars in my work-out progression.
One of the all-time great percussion keyboard studies.

I worked through this book in the late 60's while studying with Tony Cirone at San Jose State. I remembered it fondly and now that I am teaching my son mallet instruments, I am going through it again. There are many newer xylophone books out and several that lead to a higher level of difficulty, but no other combines the studies of technique, repertoire and musicality like Modern School for Xylophone...This is THE book all mallet players should master before anything else.
This book has a variety of music that is a pleasure to play!

When I first bought this book, I was looking for it for one reason: becuase it was inexpensive and had a solo that I was interested in playing. But boy, it is good for a whole lot more than that. It has 2- 4 mallet parts that are fun to learn, and each have their own "spunk" in them!! I highly recommend this book for intermediate and professional mallet players!!
