Modern China: an illustrated history

Roberts did an excellent retelling China's past 200 years--and did so quite efficiently in 280 pages. Excellent for those who want to get a general overview of how China got to where it is today. Don't let all the names of people get in the way. While very straight-forward in its telling, the numerous critiques of historical situations may get in the way of the overall content. Easy to read and understand. A great survey of China's recent past that will make you want to read more about the specific aspects referred to in this book. Great for students and those who want some background before a trip to China.
