A seventh grade birder named Tess moves to Pitt Polder after her grandfather dies. She struggles with friendships, loss, and environmental issues. She meets a fellow birder by the name of Clara Williams. Clara has a pet sandhill crane named Tabi which wins Tess's heart. In an effort to increase the crane population in the polder, Clara plans to steal a sandhill crane egg from the nests of several mating pairs, incubate the eggs, and then release the cranes back into the wild. Events happen which call Tess and her friends to help. Many obstacles are encountered by Tess and her new friends.
