"Erica Vetsch is the master of all things Regency." --Lorri Dudley, author of The Duke's Refuge Caught in the explosion of the Hammersmith Mill in London, Bow Street runner Daniel Swann rushes to help any survivors only to find the mill's owner dead of an apparent gunshot--but no sign of the killer. Even though the owner's daughter, Agatha Montgomery, mourns his death, she may be the only one. It seems there are more than a few people with motive for murder. But Daniel can't take this investigation slow and steady. Instead, he must dig through all the suspects as quickly as he can, because the clock is ticking until his mysterious patronage--and his job as a runner--comes to an abrupt and painful end. It seems to Daniel that, like his earthly father, his heavenly Father has abandoned him. Lady Juliette Thorndike is Agatha's bosom friend and has the inside knowledge of the wealthy London ton to be invaluable to Daniel. She should be in a perfect position to help with the case. But when her trusted instructor in the art of spy craft orders her to stay out of the investigation, Lady Juliette obeys. That is, until circumstances intervene, and she drops right into the middle of the deadly pursuit. When a dreadful accident ends in another death on the mill floor, Daniel discovers a connection to his murder case--and to his own secret past. Now he and Juliette are in a race to find the killer before his time runs out. "A romantic Regency mystery, beautifully threaded with God's grace." --Alissa Baxter, author of The Viscount's Lady Novelist "Riveting. . . . A diverse cast offers endless wit and fascinating, well-rounded perspectives, and intrigues are layered and textured. It's the perfect combination for a fully satisfying mystery." --Jocelyn Green, Christy Award-winning author of Drawn by the Current
"We cannot judge Scripture or what we know about God by our own experiences and emotions, because those are changeable and untrustworthy most of the time."
Wow, this second book in the series was packed to the brim with suspense, mystery, secrets and romance! I highly recommend it to any Regency mystery fans out there. The series should be read in order though since this second book is built on the foundation laid in the previous book.
Juliette and Daniel are finally in training to be agents of the Crown and their interactions are as delicious as ever. Juliette's nurturing side comes out in full force here as she helps her best friend shoulder through tragedy and loss. Daniel's shortcomings are displayed prominently as he struggles with arrogance, prejudice, and self-absorption. I totally loved his Bow Street partner Ed, who is such a gem and a straight-forward mentor for Daniel. The murder mystery component was great and the spark of romance was sweet. The theme of God being a good Father was a noteworthy one throughout the story. And we finally get some answers to questions....but you'll have to read to book to find out what these gasp-worthy secrets are.
I received the book from the publisher via JustRead Tours and was under no obligation to post a positive comment. All opinions are my own.
