Book Overview

Foreword The last time I saw the Messiah's Handbook was when I threw it away. I had been using it as I was taught in Illusions: hold question in mind, close eyes, open handbook at random, pick left page or right. Eyes open, read answer. Always beforeitworked: fear dissolved in asmile, doubt lifted by sudden understanding.Always had I been charmed and entertained by what these pages had to tell me. So that dark day I opened the book, trusting. "Why did my friend Donald Shimoda, who had so much to teach that we so needed to learn, why did he have to die such a senseless death?" Eyes open, listen to the answer: Everything in this book may be wrong.

A burst of night and rage, I remember, instant fury. I turn to it for help and this is my answer? I threw the book as hard and as far from meas I could, pages fluttering above that nameless Iowa hayfield, the thing tumbling slow motion, shuddering forever down toward the weeds. I didn't watch to see where it fell. I flew from that field and never flew back. The handbook, that senseless hurtful agony-page, was gone. Twenty years later came a package to a writer in care of the publisher. In the package a note: Dear Richard Bach, I found this when I was plowing my dad's soybean field. The field's a quarter-section used to be in hay and he told me you landed there once with the guy they killed they said was magic. So this has been plowed under I guess for a long time else it's been disked and harrowed every year and nobody's seen it till now. For all that, it's not much hurt and I figured it's your property and if you're still alive you ought to have it.

No return address. On the pages, my own fingerprints in engine oil from an old Fleet biplane, a sifting of coarse dusts, a stem or two of grass falling out when I fanned it open. Rage gone, I held the book along time, remembering. Everything in this book may be wrong. Sure enough. But everything may be right, as well. Right and wrong's not up to a book. I'm the only one to say what's true for me. I'm responsible. I leafed through the pages, wondering. Is the book returned to me the same one I threw away, so long ago? Had it been resting quietly underground or had it been changing to become what some future reader needed to remember? At last, eyes closed, I held the handbook once more and asked. Dear strange mystical volume, why did you come back? Riffled the pages for a moment, opened my eyes and saw.

"They give you a book to read"

I keep this book on the shelf with my favorite books. I think of this as a wisdom or oracle type book. It's the 'lost' book from Richard Bach's Illusions. I usually pick this up when there's something bothering me, or something big is going on in my life. Sometimes I open it up, and get nothing (or so I think at the time). Then, there are times when I open it up and amazed at what I find! For instance, I was trying to decide WHY I should go into a certain career. I was back and forth over "should I do it or not?!" -I picked up this book, and this is what I read: "If God looked directly into your eyes and said, "I command that you be happy in the world for as long as you live," What would you do?" Hmmmm. Think about that! I like this book. Even the times when I flip it open to something and think that it doesn't apply to me, or maybe I didn't like what I read in reference to what's going on with me, I think it's a cool book. I would highly recommend it to anyone. If you're giving someone the book "Illusions" by Richard Bach as a gift, consider really treating them, and give them this book too! When I first got the book, I think I may have read it thru, just to see what it was like. There is a short paragraph on each page.(the pages are like parchment paper, but not as thin) Now, I just pick it up and see what pops out at me. This is an excerpt from the paragraph on the back of the book: "Don't you get any formal training to be a master?" "They give you a book to read."

troubleshooting fate

with the eerie accuracy of this book's mechanics, i do wonder about how fiction it really is. as a big fan of Richard Bach, i immediately jumped onto this newer addition when i became aware of it's existence, and am continually happy with it. the wisdom of the pages posses a very rounded out stability that can be humbling if used correctly. i choose to think you are reading this for a reason you may or may not know you chose, but if you agree with this statement, get this handbook. you won't be disappointed.

Bach, as usual

What can you expect from Richard Bach? Nothing but the best, of course, and so it is with the Messiah's Handbook. The best. However, if you haven't read ILLUSIONS it may be absolutely meaningless to you. (I can't believe you haven't read ILLUSIONS!) Naturally, everything depends on what you're expectations are and this met mine (and all the friends/family I passed copies to) perfectly. Have a knotty situation going on? Open the book at any page and there's an answer. Well, not exactly THE answer but an answer that makes you think, and when you think solutions are always available. Love it! If you buy it, carry it around with you. Use it frequently.

A Small but Powerful Book of Wisdom

The book that disappeared, coincidentally reappears and Richard Bach has now published it. It is a book filled with wisdom and thought provoking statements that will make you stop and think. It is a book that you can read all in one sitting (exactly what I did when I received it!). Or, it is a book that you can open to any page, and read that page, and reflect on it. Have you ever read a book where throughout the book, there is wisdom that you wish you could capture and refer to later? Well, this book does just that. To give you a small sample of the wisdom in the book, below are some quotes: "Life tells you nothing, it shows you everything." "There's a reason you chose what's happening around you. Hang on, live your way through the best you know, and in a bit you'll find out why." "If it's never your fault, you can't take responsibility for it. If you can't take responsibility for it, you'll always be its victim." "Having climbed certain peaks you'll descend no more, but spread your wings and fly beyond." "You do not exist to impress the world. You exist to live your life in a way that will make you happy." "You're master of what you've lived, artisan at what you're living, amateur at what's next to live." "You are never given a wish without also being given the power to make it true. You may have to work for it, however." In Richard's forward there is a quote from the book, "Every person, all the events of your life, are there because you have drawn them there. What you choose to do with them is up to you." I would highly recommend this book. And as you read the above quote, I hope you choose to read Richard's newest book, Messiah's Handbook. The book is a wonderful motivator, one that you can refer to on a daily basis.
