Dumped, duped, and depressed, Joni Herrschwitz has nearly given up when a serendipitous meeting with brazen, former professional mermaid Ruby Witherspoon puts her on a life-altering adventure in a yellow cab headed south. From New York to Florida, Ruby, Joni, and their mysterious cab driver, Maria Mu oz, learn what really matters in life as they stop at every tacky tourist trap they pass. Their destination is Weeki Wachee, a forgotten Florida roadside attraction where mermaids have performed since the 1940s. When Ruby neglects to inform her stick-in-the-mud daughters of her travel plans, they send out an alert, and to their chagrin, the entire country gets involved in the search. And when a New York shock jock starts to tango with Ruby on the radio, things get chaotic - and dangerous. The road to Weeki Wachee is lined with laughter, romance and life. Just open your eyes and swim along for the ride. ----- Oprah introduced the world to Fawn Germer, saying how "very inspiring" her writing was. Oprah didn't know about Fawn's wild and irreverent other side, which she lets loose in her hysterically funny first novel, Mermaid Mambo. She is the author of two best-selling books, Hard Won Wisdom and Mustang Sallies. A four-time Pulitzer-nominated journalist, she was a correspondent for The Washington Post and U.S. News and World Report. She is one of the nation's most sought-after keynote speakers on leadership, risk-taking and personal empowerment.
This is the first book I have read from Fawn Germer, and I enjoyed it very much. The book is a zany hysterical adventure and I hope that the main character, Ruby, comes back to live in an adventure #2. Its been years since I laughed out while reading a book.
What a great romp! With something to think about ....

I've read all of Fawn's other books, and have even been lucky enough to meet her in person. This is such a wonderful book -- mystery, a little scary stuff, lots of laughter, and just wonderful women teaching each other...I couldn't put it down, laughed out loud, and was sorry to see the last page turned. Well-done, Fawn!

This was a great book. I could not put it down. I enjoyed each of the characters and their adventure. I will read it again. I was given my book and bought another to share with my aunt & uncle. They both loved it. I hope I have the same sense of adventure when I get old!

As an entrepreneur and starting my first business I was encouraged and inspired by the women featured in Ms. Germer's first book Hard Won Wisdom. Thankfully this was followed by another of Fawn's works, Mustang Sallies. Since i have her in my favorites I found this new novel and ordered it immediately. What a follow-up! Again following the paths of intelligent, entertaining and HILARIOUS women! This is the story of three women, young, middle-aged and old, as they make their way to Florida in a New York taxi cab. They leave New York uncertain about their place in the world, but figure out what life is all about as they build their friendships and explore the serendipitous side of life that they haven't indulged before. It is a crazy fun book that finishes with a greater sense of meaning for those of us who go along for the ride. I loved the characters, the settings, the whole concept. And, the author is as good as fiction as she is with the more serious non-fiction she writes. Congratulations Ms. Germer! when is the next adventure?
