A fifth-grade school teacher in southern Illinois, Develyn Worrell's nightmare begins one summer when she discovers her husband's infidelity. She divorces him without ever telling her twenty-one-year-old daughter why. Although Devvy has a heart change and desires for reconciliation, he dies before she can tell him of her desire. The daughter blames her mother for her father's death. Memories of a Dirt Road Town begins the story the following summer. Brokenhearted about her husband's death and her daughter's decision not to come home for the summer, Devvy decides to find a little dirt road town in Wyoming where she had vacationed as a child. She remembers fondly the sunset and a beautiful Roan horse. Upon arrival, Devvy purchases a Roan mare and a burro, rents a little cabin, and watches as God brings three very important men into her life.
Develyn Worrell is a fifth grade Indiana school teacher, divorced and later widowed, with one twenty-year-old daughter, Delaney. Delaney isn't talking to her mother because she is blaming her father's fatal heart attack on Develyn. With her summer empty, Develyn decides to revisit her past, the only place that has ever given her peace--a small town in Wyoming. But Develyn doesn't remember the name of the town. In spite of her best friend's misgivings, Develyn heads west. As soon as she arrives in Wyoming, a cowboy invites her to a wild horse auction. Develyn refuses, hoping to find the town she's hunting, even though she still doesn't remember the name. In a series of bizarre events, Develyn does find her town, and oddly enough, it is the same place where the wild horse auction is taking place. With three cowboys pursuing her, can Develyn still find the peace she remembers as well as mend the relationship with her daughter? MEMORIES OF A DIRT ROAD TOWN is rather a quirky read. Develyn is a lovable character, but for a forty-five year old school teacher, she acted lost, young, and irresponsible. She seemed to have an unusual ability to make "best friends" easily, from waitresses in a twenty-four hour café to barrel racers at a rodeo. Some of the events that took place seemed rather contrived, but in spite of these . . . or maybe because of these . . . the book is adorable and easy to read. MEMORIES OF A DIRT ROAD TOWN is the first book in the Horse Dreams series. Readers will not want to miss it, and will be anxiously waiting for book two in the series. [...]

Great Bly Book! This is exactly what you'd expect from Stephen Bly. Funny, hidden humor also, well written, and of course, the message of God's love and understanding heart which is offered to all of us. Very good book. Would, and have, recommend to anyone.

For a long time now Stephen Bly has been my favorite author and this latest book is just another example of why. Mr. Bly's writing makes you feel as if you are apart of the story and with each book in a series you feel as if you were visiting old friends. His books are heartwarming and humorous, living and breathing the spirit of the west. I can't wait for the next book in this series!
A fun and touching read

This book was a fun read as well as touching. It has characters that just seem to come to life. The interaction between them was great. Develyn, the main character, needed to get away due to circumstances in her life that have left her feeling that she needs to find some peace and direction. She decides to visit a place in Wyoming that she and her family visited when she was just 10. During her stay out west, she makes friends and not just the human kind. She draws closer to God through all of this. She does have an adventure while in Wyoming, fast horses, 4-wheelers & guns. I'm never disappointed in Stephen Bly's books.
