In addition to enlightening my young daughter as to basic environmental issues, geography, and zoology, I have been enjoying Weidensaul and Van Patter's creative work myself. I am intrigued with their hip, genre-busting writing style: reminding me of action comics and "retro" 70's Saturday morning cartoons. The book is fun to read aloud, although one wonders if it would read smoother with dialogue balloons replacing the narrative. The exhuberant illustrations engaged my daughter from the first reading (there have been at least 250 readings since.) It's a favorite in our house!
Informative, fun and educationally sound

An uncomplicated tale that graphically portrays the interdependence of lifeforms in the fragile ecosystem of the rainforest. The illustrations are remarkable, not only for their bright, vivid colors, but also for their accuracy and detail. Fact and fiction are woven together in a style that captivates young readers. This is a book that students remember long after the rainforest unit is over.
