A lonely island mouse rescues two small kittens and a bunny during a terrible storm in Kahaluu and sets to work raising her little family under the Mango tree, teaching them gratitude and kindness. When an artist and her two girls move to the hill, the mouse realizes that she, too, has talent, and helps the artist finish her paintings by night. But their peaceful life on Mango Hill is threatened when she overhears the Centipede King and his army planning to take over the artist's house. Can Halau Mouse save her own little family, as well as the artist's? In 1988, Diana Hansen-Young, one of Hawaii's leading artists, created the warm and humorous Mango Hill series of books for children of all ages. Now in its fourth printing, Diana is bringing back the Mango Hill series for the grandchildren of the original readers (and any occasional grandma who feels nostalgic). Diana still writes and paints and often rises early to find her work mysteriously finished. She welcomes the occasional painted pawprint, the strange smudge on her keyboard, and the tracks on the deck that lead to her kitchen door. . .
[I've had Mango Hill since I was about 7 years old, and I've gone back to it time and time again since I first read it.] It was a great book when I first read it, and its a great book when I read it now. You never tire of it. The pictures are phenominal and while the story line is about talking cats, a bunny, a mouse and giant centipedes, the message that you get out of the book is still the same. Go for your dreams, and stand up for what you believe in and love. If you do, the rewards can be great. Mango Hill is a great book for children and adults alike, and the story and the pictures are incredible. If you want your child to read something with a little substance, give them this book.
