All mammals large and small that make their homes in the mountains, valleys, deserts and coasts of California are covered in this book. Features full-color photographs, color illustrations of each... This description may be from another edition of this product.
I can't find anything lacking in this book. The range maps are great, the highly informative text is great, and there are additionally little "did you know?" boxes with "gee-whiz" info in them. Highly informative. It's quite comprehensive, and even includes over a dozen non-native mammals (did you know we have feral zebras in Calif?), and species which have been extirpated. Bravo.
Very Well Done

If you live in California, you already know that most books on mammals really don't reflect the west coast. Our experience has been that the east coast is heavily emphasized, and that if you do try to identify an animal, you often wouldn't be able to tell for sure whether it REALLY is found in California. This book, however, is fantastic. If you want to know just what type of squirrel it was that you saw, this book can tell you. There is a mixture of photos and illustrations. Both are excellent - good detail and nice size. Each animal's entry includes a photo or illustration, and information grouped under the headings of Description, Range, Habitat, Den, Food, Young, and Similar Species. Reminds me somewhat of an Audubon guide, except the photos/illustrations and text are together, not separated as in the Audubon guides. An excellent mammal reference guide - the best we've found so far!
