Mala 19980

Mala 19980 is a drama set in Birkanau-Auschwitz. It is the true story of hope, humanity and dignity while imprisoned in the den of the Beast. Prisoners, Mala and Edek fall in love. Others in the vast camp network protect them against discovery by the Nazis. Their romance, rare in Auschwitz offers hope to others. Hope is the one thing the Nazis can not tolerate. Mala, although not a member of the resistance in the camps, nevertheless does resist in a more than passive way. She uses her position as a courier, interpreter in the "Political Department' to aid others, regardless of nationality or faith. The department manned by Jewish secretaries keeps track of the prisoners including registering their deaths. Her actions rank high amongst women of the resistance, against the Nazi animals. When the two star crossed lovers manage an escape, all prisoners pray for their safety. The play poses the question: How could seemingly ordinary people commit such heinous acts? Perhaps Hanna Arendt was correct when she called it the "banality of evil." Some of the perpetrators were pure evil, sadistic to the core. This becomes not only the story of Mala and Edek, but also the story of the Beasts of the death camp holding life and death in their hands, who deliberately choose who shall live for awhile and who shall die now.
