Magda's tio has purchased the perfect Pinata for her little brother's birthday. In fact, Gabriel's Pinata is so perfect that he insists that no one break it. What fun is a birthday party without a Pinata? Finally, with the help of her abuela's resourceful little cat. Tita, Magda works some midnight magic and engineers an ingenious solution to save the party and the Pinata."
I read this book to my class of first grade students (Mexican-American English Language Learners) and they absolutely loved it. I was concerned that the book would be too long or too complicated to hold their interest, but they all sat captivated throughout my whole reading of the story. The smattering of Spanish words and phrases and familiar family dynamics helped my students maintain focus on the book. Even when the story got a little confusing, (the main character fashions a complicated system for allowing candy to fall from the piñata without breaking it) my students maintained interest and worked to make sense of Magda's solution.
