After seeing the movie, with Peter Postlethwaite and Dame Thora Hird, I found myself laughing and crying within the first five minutes.I knew I had to read the book!.I know that books offer so much more of the story than can be put in an hour and a half video, so I went on a search. The book was not available in Canada, so a friend, who was traveling to England, brought it back for me. I was not disappointed, the book gave so much more! The wonderful, loving, quirky relationship between mother and son, makes you wish you could be a part of their family. To see the world through the eyes of the mother, would make it seem such a wonderous place, and when she could no longer express her joy for life in words that were recognizable to us ordinary folk, her son was there to act as her interpreter. To be so much a part of another person, that you can read their thoughts by the tone of their voice, and the look in their eyes, makes me envious. If you read this book, be prepared for your heart to hurt, but , also to smile.
A wonderful tribute

I bought this book after watching the television play of Lost for Words, which I thoroughly enjoyed. I wasn't disappointed. The book had more room for detail and I loved it: it's one of the funniest, saddest books I've ever read. I've since read other books by Deric Longden and enjoyed every one.
such a funny, yet sad book
