"A hero with Huck Finn's heart and charm, lighting by El Greco and jokes by Punch and Judy.... Riddley Walker is haunting and fiercely imagined and-this matters most-intensely ponderable." -Benjamin... This description may be from another edition of this product.
This is another smile-inducing collection of top columns from Mike Royko (1932-1997). Royko used wit, humor, sarcasm, and self-effacement during his 34 years as a daily newspaper columnist in Chicago. Often poking fun, Royko took on hypocrites and corrupt politicians, used his alter ego Slats Grobnik to make points, and stood up for little guys and simple justice. Among the top columns in these pages are those describing the closing of Chicago's Riverview Amusement Park, the arrest of the former security guard who'd discovered the Watergate burglary, and philosophical optimism from a faded Tiny Tim. There's also knocks at Mayor Jane Byrne, President Reagan, and the State of Indiana - which annoyed many Hoosiers and brought response from the Mayor of Indianapolis. Royko writes humorously about attending his first Cub game as a kid, un-stellar 1940's shortstop Lennie Merullo (who graciously wrote back), and even a couple words on the White Sox, whom Royko, like much of the media, often ignored. All in all, these 100 columns should give you cheer and chuckles. Many of us in Chicago (and elsewhere) still miss Royko, but we can enjoy his columns in books like this one, ONE MORE TIME, LIKE I WAS SAYING, and several others.

"Like I Was Sayin'" is another collection of great Mike Royko newspaper columns, these drawn from the 60s, 70s and early 80s. Royko was the best newspaper columnist in America because of his humor and his strong nose for justice. Any of his collections of columns are a must read for those interested in journalism.
