More than two millennia ago, a child was born in the village of Bethlehem, and from this event grew, first, a devoted cult, then a dedicated following, then a religion that is today the worlds largest: Christianity. The celebration of Christs birth is a glorious holiday. It is beautiful, warm, festive, joyous, sweet and steeped in tradition. Life captures in words and vibrant pictures the customs of Christmas everywhere, from Sinterklass in Holland to the observance of the winter solstice at Englands Stonehenge to the origins of this great day in the Holy Land. On Christmas, the world rejoices and reflects. Here, Life does too, in this special commemorative edition Christmas Around The World.

Great gift (esp. when you don't know what else to give)

Every Christmas, the toughest giftees on my list are my brother-in-law's parents. Suffice it to say, I have to find them something that wouldn't even offend "The Church Lady," that is within the agreed-upon per-family-member budget, and that maybe, just maybe, they might actually enjoy. Well, after years of unused picture frames, cast aside coffee mugs, and polite sighs of "What a lovely thought, dear," I finally got a hit. "Life: Christmas Around the World" is just the right combination of "wholesome," "affordable," and "interesting" that I've been looking for. My brother-in-law's mother was enthralled and actually read it cover-to-cover while the grandkids were playing with their new toys. Score! As for a review of the book itself, I recommend it high(ish)ly. It's primarily a collection of colorful photos of (guess what) Christmas celebrations around the world. Think of it as a mini-lesson on one of the more charming ways in which our world's cultures differ, and a celebration of those difference. As other reviewers have noted, it would've been nice if there had been more text to explain what was going on in those lovely pictures. So, the book loses a star on that point. Nevertheless, "Life: Christmas Around the World" makes a great gift, the pictures really are beautiful, and the price is right.
