After the commissioning of the first armored reconnaissance model adopted in 1933 (AMR 33), the cavalry asked Renault for an improved version with a rear engine. It was adopted in 1935, hence the name of AMR 35. It was manufactured in multiple versions with varied weapons and two command car models equipped with radios.
