Activities for Teaching Concepts of Peace to Youth
Published by Thriftbooks.com User , 15 years ago
This book of activities geared towards teaching peace in the home or classroom. In addition to activities, the author provides guidance on discipline, family meetings, conflict resolution and listening skills. The book focuses on four major concepts: (1) accepting self and others; (2) communicating effectively; (3) resolving conflicts; and (4) understanding intercultural differences. There are 56 activities for various grade levels. The activities can be used as is, or enhanced by the teacher. Naomi Drew addresses the philosophy of peacemaking in the beginning of the book. She provides valuable insights, statistics and tips to assist the teacher in preparing successful lessons. Note: many of the activities state the age level as all grades. When using these activities, be sure that they are developmentally appropriate. All grades is a warning sign that the activity may be too abstract for the younger grades, or too elementary for the upper grades.
A Fantastic Resource for Educators

Learning the Skills of Peacemaking has turned our school around. Every teacher has a copy, and by doing the lessons on a regular basis we have reduced fighting among students and we've completely improved the atmosphere in our building. I didn't think these changes would be possible, but I've seen them happen with my own eyes. I strongly urge other teachers and adminstators to buy this book. It really makes a difference.
