This year, 2012, marks the one hundredth anniversary of the founding of Lakewood, in Muskegon County, Michigan. In the pages of this book, I looked at the history of the community development through articles appearing mostly from the Muskegon Chronicle. From good to bad, there was no attempt to present a one-sided story, but to tell it as it unfolded, for the reader to judge for themselves. Bertram Chapman Mayo, the founder of Lakewood, was the "Johnny Appleseed" of the incentive based system, of the selling of resort lots. Unknown to most, Lakewood was only one of five such projects undertaken by Mr. Mayo during his short life time. From coast to coast, thousands can give thanks to his dream to provide a resort location that was within the reach of anyone with the desire for a better life. Next Stop Lakewood!
