This was a good who-done-it mystery which kept me guessing until the end. Ms. Hazard did a wonderful job on letting out hints here and there, and who and what, just enough to kept readers engrossed in the story without been bored by it. Her writing was also commendable--smooth, flowing and sensitive. My only complaint was that I wished the heroine could be a bit more sensible and not so naive. Although we should consider that she has lived in a simple life as a Methodist and abroad for seven years, but nonetheless, she was after all a twenty-five year old woman; I would prefer she showed some more "pluck" than was portrayed here, it would be greater to see her taking over her duty as the mistress of the Hall and contribute more in this puzzle solving mystery.

A nice story to read. Maybe a little bit predictable. Not the very best of Barbara Hazard, but ok for a rainy sunday afternoon.
