Luis Maldonado hizo estudios graduados en Literatura Comparada en la Universidad de Puerto Rico y obtuvo su doctorado en Literatura Latinoamericana en la Universidad de Georgetown. Ha impartido clases en Emory University Middlebury College y actualmente trabaja como profesor asociado en Southern Methodist University. La retórica de la herida refleja sus intereses investigativos por la teoría literaria, la cultura mediática, y los discursos nacionales y biopolíticos. Ha publicado artículos en diversas revistas académicas y ha participado en conferencias en los Estados Unidos, Inglaterra, México, Japón, Canadá y Brasil.
