La Esperanza is a story about Matt Regalado, a young lawyer who lives on his boat in a San Diego marina. Matt falls in love with Sofia, the beautiful and stylish owner of a La Jolla art gallery where she sells contemporary Mexican art. Sofia is the daughter of Eduardo Moreno, who launders cash for the Tijuana drug cartel. Sofia also deals in art looted by the Nazis during WWII that she acquires from Arturo Hoffman, the grandson of Adolph Hitler's personal photographer. Matt's mother was working as a housecleaner-babysitter for the Aronsen family when she was taken advantage by Dr. Jay Aronsen, a San Diego orthopedic surgeon. She was sixteen. Matt is basically a good and trustworthy person, but he is drawn into the world of crime that Sofia comes from.
