This play has been unknown in history and criticism, but politically and culturally it was quite significant in its time. It was a piece of political propaganda; it was a key piece in the (unsuccessful) campaign for Cardinal Cisneros' beatification; and, later, it conveyed other political messages during the negotiations of the Treaty of the Pyrenees, which concluded the wars with France. In the introduction, Javier Gonz lez has braided historiography with critical theory to come up with some proposals that are original and without precedent; the introduction also contains a substantial amount of new data.
