Kristin's Wilderness: A Braided Trail

This artistically created book tells the story of a young girl growing up among wildlife researchers in the northwoods. She finds her way into womanhood through the important relationships in her life, including the old Finnish ladies who share the sauna, two wolverines escaped from their observation pen, and the northern native people with whom she spends a winter. Generously illustrated with delicate watercolors, the story is beautiful and gentle, yet it will move you to tears and make you grin.

Maine Guide with a Soul

This excellent book is not just for young adults, or females. It is a moving story for anyone who appreciates the culture of the North Woods, in my case a 66 year old man who loves the north woods and the values of the Scandinavians who "live the culture". In fact, Kristin's Wilderness is written by a highly respected "Maine Guide With a Soul" - a "real" man!

Kristin's Wilderness: A Braided Trail is a wondrous chapter book

Beautifully illustrated with soft watercolors throughout, Kristin's Wilderness: A Braided Trail is a wondrous chapter book for readers aged eight to eighty. Told in first-person perspective, Kristin's Wilderness follows a young girl's journey into womanhood among wildlife researchers in the northwoods, chapters tell of the diverse characters in her life from the old Finnish ladies who share the sauna to two wolverines who escape their observation pen to the northern native people among whom she spends a winter. The paintings especially capture the mood and majesty of the natural world that surrounds her, in this gentle and heartwarming tribute coming of age amid the changing of the seasons.

Winner of the Maine Lupine Award

Yesterday during a confernece in Maine, Garrett Conover was awarded the Lupine Award for a juvenile/YA book. As a member of the Lupine Award Committee I suggest that all libraries who serve middle school students should include this title in their collection. The story is powerful, the illustrations lovely and the overall appearance is close to perfect.
