A textbook for English-speaking students of the German language, with particular emphasis on the written word. Teachers commonly discover that students who otherwise have no difficulty in expressing themselves in the foreign idiom, and who read without hesitation, find it hard to put down even simple sentences in writing. There are available many grammars, graded textbooks, reviews and readers for almost every course of instruction, but little has been done to provide the instructor of German with a text that allows him to improve the student's ability to write German, once he has covered the elements of grammar and has practiced reading simple texts and somewhat more difficult material. It is the opinion of the authors that a book designed for this purpose should present its material exclusively in the foreign language and combine a review of grammar with systematic suggestions for composition and word study. The authors have herein chosen brief German texts for simple and sometimes more complicated retelling. For the many assignments in composition, and for assignments associated with grammar review and word study, the end vocabulary, which is included in the book, will be found useful. It is the only part of the text in which English translations are given. [From the Foreword]
