It's the summer of 1934, and eleven-year-old Kit Kittredge has won an essay contest about the best part of the New Deal. Her prize is a trip to anywhere in the United States, so she decides to visit her brother Charlie, who is working for the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) at Glacier National Park in Montana. Along the way, she will get a chance to visit the Chicago World's Fair. Kit travels by train from her home in Cincinnati, to Chicago, and then to Montana. She meets many different people along the way, including a girl from a small town visiting the fair, two young sisters forced to become hobos, a young girl from a Western ranch, and a young Native American girl living near Glacier National Park. This was a very interesting and unique book from the American Girls Collection. It is made to look like a scrapbook kept by Kit, and features brief diary entries, drawings and photos, and removable objects. It's a great book for American Girls fans, and it teaches a bit about the Great Depression and how it changed life for many different people. And the design of the book is beautiful. I highly recommend it.
