In Just One, Lord , Barbara Jacobsen takes the reader on a journey to four different countries in Africa. The story begins with missionary training in Zambia, but circles back to what events led Barbara to a place where she could hear God calling her. "I was not the obvious pick to be a missionary," she recalls. Many doubted she could do this, including herself. Even her pastor said, "Maybe you heard wrong." But God proved over and over that she had heard right. She was in Africa within six months of hearing His call. In her years of service, she saw the terrible plight of orphans as AIDS claimed the lives of their parents in Kenya. She witnessed the horrendous aftermath of the Liberian and Sierra Leonian extremely violent civil wars. Sometimes she was given the easy road and beheld God's miracles. Other times she faced overwhelming stress, life threatening illnesses, and sank into utter despair as the circumstances of the people around her broke her heart. "I gained confidence that although I wasn't great, God could and did use me," Barbara says. She gained a deeper understanding of who God is, learned to trust Him, and found that she could make a difference, for more than just one.
