"A. E. Maxwell wrote one of the smartest, most consistent PI series in recent memory. Big plots, great villains, and a kickass private eye with plenty of humanity. The toughness of Robert B. Parker's... This description may be from another edition of this product.
What annoys me about the "Spencer" books is too much time spent on emotive pillow- and non-pillow talk between the male and female leads. This book has the same problem but even more so. The authors need to decide whether they want to produce detective fiction or bodice-rippers. The 2nd book in this series is better but still too much heart-rending and soul-searching. I have the whole series and I hope things get better.
Great Book, Great Series

If you have not come across Fiddler and Fiora before, you are in for a treat. This is the first book. There are several more -- all very good. The only bad thing is that the series ended.
Back in print!

I'm so glad to see this series coming back into print. They are well-plotted and highly suspenseful, but I still own and re-read the originals after almost 20 years mainly for the characters and their relationship. Fiddler and Fiora are smart, strong, determined people. They have integrity, though Fiddler in particular tends to care more about what is right than what is legal. Fiddler is in some respects the classic alpha male, but he doesn't ride roughshod over Fiora - and she'd cut him off at the knees if he tried. They have enough in common and respect and understand each other so well that the bond between them is powerful and believable, but they have enough differences over things that matter that their conflicts are powerful and believable as well. Secondary characters are vivid and fun, too. Or vivid and scary. These books are on the edge of my tolerance for gritty realism, but my tolerance is low. There's violence and betrayal and corruption, but it never feels gratuitous. In fact, it's the reason Fiddler does what he does. The series starts out well and gets better and better. Recommended highly.
Terrific

This book is a great start to a great series. If you have not met Fiddler and Fiora yet, you are in for a treat. The only bad thing is that the series did not go on forever.
Most under noticed artist

Bertie Higgins is amazing! His music takes you to places many of us have never been. Listening to his powerful voice, you hear his heart and soul. I find it hard to understand why this artist has been so under noticed.
The Relationship Will Yank Your Stomach Claw

This is an excellent, little known detective-type novel series involving the beautiful Fiora, the financial wiz, and the rough, former cop Fiddler whose fortune is based on a deceased relative's drug money. Fiddler not only has to deal with his ex-wife, he has to deal with his ex-wife's lover when his ex-wife's twin is pulled into an international espionage scheme. A good, hot read.
