Written by three Java developers, this work shows how to create Java applets, build a Java program from scratch, create eye-catching Web pages, access databases using HotJava, use music in home pages, master and design protocols, and use security methods in Java. Readers are shown how to customize Netscape 2.0 Gold and how to create Java applications. As well as explaining advanced techniques like image manipulation, custom control writing, and security, the work gives tips on selling and distributing programs, and discusses impact of Java on Internet advertising, education, software distribution, games, and commerce. The accompanying CD-ROM includes a complete version of Java, sample code, the best Java applets, Java programming helper tools, Java binaries, and the Java Development Kit (JDK) 2.0.
The nice thing about this book is the examples are much closer to real-world problems you might tackle than the contrived examples you find in other texts. This is a very PRACTICAL book. The main problem with it is its age. It needs to be re-released to cover JDK 1.1 and 1.2
Good introduction to Java.

Works great as an introductory lesson to Java. Each section must be followed through to get a grasp of its concept. The index is very sparse, so it makes a bad reference book
